The House of Representatives on Thursday rejected a Senate bill aimed at funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), extending the current government shutdown into its 42nd day. The decision exacerbates ongoing travel disruptions and leaves critical government services unfunded. Lawmakers cited disagreements over border security measures as a key factor in the failure to pass the funding measure.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated, “We need to work together to find a solution that upholds our border security while ensuring the continuity of essential services.” The Senate’s proposed bill included additional funding for border security but ultimately did not gain enough support from House Republicans.

The ongoing shutdown has already led to significant delays and cancellations at airports nationwide, impacting thousands of travelers. Essential services such as immigration processing and cybersecurity have also been hampered, with officials expressing concerns over national security.
