Hochul’s Lead Over Blakeman Narrows to 13 Points, Siena Poll Shows
New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s lead over her challenger, Republican nominee Lee Zeldin, has decreased to 13 points, according to a Siena College poll released on Monday. Hochul currently holds 51% support among likely voters, while Zeldin has garnered 38% ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election on November 8.
The poll indicates that voter sentiment may be shifting, with Hochul’s support slipping from a more comfortable margin in earlier surveys. Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg noted, “This race is tightening as the election approaches, and Zeldin is gaining traction among undecided voters.”
The survey also highlighted a significant gender gap, with Hochul leading among women voters while Zeldin finds stronger support among men. The poll surveyed 805 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
In addition to the tight race, voter concerns about crime, the economy, and inflation are influencing the election dynamics. The poll reveals that 51% of voters believe the state is headed in the wrong direction, a sentiment that could sway undecided voters.
Hochul became New York’s first female governor in 2021 following the resignation of Andrew Cuomo. She is seeking a full term in office while Zeldin, a congressman, aims to make history as the first Republican governor of New York since George Pataki left office in 2006.
This polling data signals a competitive race, with both candidates ramping up their campaign efforts in the weeks leading to Election Day. Recent political advertising and public appearances are likely to play a crucial role in shaping voter perceptions.
The Siena poll’s findings reflect a broader trend of heightened political engagement among New York voters as they prepare to make their choice in the gubernatorial election.
