The Food Recovery Network (FRN) is addressing food insecurity across the United States by redirecting surplus food from institutions to those in need. Founded in 2011, the organization mobilizes students and volunteers to recover excess food from college campuses and other facilities. With global food waste estimated at 1.3 billion tons annually, FRN aims to mitigate this issue while feeding vulnerable populations.

“Every meal recovered is a meal that can feed someone who is hungry,” said FRN co-founder and president, Ben Simon. “Our mission is not only to reduce waste but also to ensure that everyone has access to nourishing food.”

Working with over 200 campuses nationwide, FRN facilitates partnerships between food donors and local service organizations. This collaborative effort has resulted in the recovery of millions of pounds of food that would otherwise contribute to landfill waste. Volunteers play a crucial role, collecting and delivering meals to shelters and community kitchens.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, FRN adapted its programs to meet the increasing demand for food aid. The organization launched initiatives that included emergency food distribution and expanded partnerships with local food banks. In 2021 alone, FRN reported recovering over 14 million pounds of food.

Founded in the wake of a growing awareness of food waste and hunger, the Food Recovery Network aims to create a more sustainable food system. The organization not only addresses immediate food needs but also seeks to educate communities about food waste and its environmental impacts.

FRN supports other food recovery initiatives through its national network, providing resources and guidance to new chapters across the country. With the ongoing challenges of food insecurity and waste, the group’s work remains critical in fostering a more equitable food landscape.
