Democratic Congressman Joe Neguse of Colorado has indicated he may consider caucusing with Republicans if critical funding for the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program is not secured. This warning comes as Congress faces a tight deadline to finalize the budget amid growing concerns over rural funding.

Neguse stated, “We cannot afford to let PILT lapse. Our rural communities depend on these funds for essential services.” The PILT program compensates local governments for federal land that cannot be taxed, and it plays a vital role in preserving local budgets across Colorado.

The congressman emphasized that without adequate PILT funding, rural areas risk losing key resources for schools, roads, and emergency services. He noted that bipartisan support for the program has historically been strong, but recent budget discussions have raised uncertainties.
