Ladakh’s traditional Yak Churpi cheese earned a bronze medal at the International Cheese Competition held in London on October 12, 2023. This achievement comes despite the team missing their flight to the event, which initially raised concerns about their participation.

The cheese was praised for its unique flavor and texture, which are attributed to the distinct environment and diet of the local yaks. “Winning this medal is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Ladakh and the hard work of our local farmers,” said Sonam Wangchuk, who assisted in the competition.

The International Cheese Competition is a renowned event that attracts producers from around the world, showcasing a variety of cheeses. This year, over 3,000 entries were submitted from 25 countries.

Yak Churpi is traditionally made by the nomadic yak herders of Ladakh and is known for its chewy consistency and nutritional value. This recognition is expected to boost the local economy and promote further interest in sustainable dairy farming practices in the region.
